Project Description

The University of California Riverside proposes to construct the School of Medicine (SOM) Education Building II, a new facility of approximately 57,000 assignable square feet (ASF) that will directly support the academic and programmatic mission of the UCR School of Medicine by providing adequate space for existing needs, as well as allowing for future expansion of the class size (up to 125 students per class).

The proposed building is anticipated to provide up to 57,000 assignable square feet (ASF) within approximately 90,000 gross square feet (GSF). The space program will incorporate the following types of spaces, to complement SOM's existing program:

  • instruction and instruction support spaces such as classrooms, specialized teaching spaces, and lecture halls;
  • student support and study facilities including study/lounge spaces necessary to comply with accreditation standards; and,
  • academic and administrative offices and support spaces

    Please be advised that the following activities will be occurring from 6:00AM to 5:00PM on the School of Medicine Education Building II Site (SOM ED II) and adjacent areas during the week of October 11th through October 17th. The activities will occur within the areas identified in the attached exhibits and as shown in the map below.

    SOM ED I Existing Electrical Yard (South):

    • Add base in yard for drainage ( Equipment: Delivery truck, skid steer, tamper hammer, various hand tools).
    • Pedestrian access to surrounding buildings will remain open.
    • Activities and access to loading docks will not be affected.
    • Anticipated disturbances: Low level construction noise contained to SOM EDI Electrical Yard.
    • Please be advised that the accessible parking stalls on the south side of the lot will be unavailable due to the backup generator and associated equipment in order to support the de-energizing of the equipment in the existing electrical yard (please see attached exhibit).

    West Courtyard:

    • Continue work for courtyard lighting (Equipment: Mini excavator, forklift, various hand tools).
    • Continue layout and excavating of miscellaneous footings and curbs (Equipment: Mini excavator, skid steer, shovels, various hand tools).
    • Begin FRP of footings and curbs (Equipment: Concrete trucks, forklift for washout, various hand tools).

    • Continue trenching for steam, gas and compressed air from TV23 up to headhouse 7 (Equipment: Excavator, skid steer, shovels, various hand tools).

    SOM Modular Complex:

    • 10/11/21 – Crane and truck modules to new location (Equipment: 500 ton Crane, two low boy haul trucks, various rigging equipment, traffic control).
      • 6PM – 9PM: Crane arrives and setup begins
      • 9PM – 2AM: Truck to new location
      • 2AM – 4AM: Disassemble crane
    • Begin reassembly of modular complex at new location (Equipment: Generator, drills, hammers, various hand tools).

    Underground Investigation/Potholing:

    • Site investigation potholing at designated areas per attached exhibit. (equipment: industrial vacuum truck, shovels, jackhammers, wheelbarrows, brooms and various hand tools).
      • Anticipated disturbances: minimal jackhammering – max 6 locations (12”x12”), slight vibrations and running engines.
    • Pedestrian access to surrounding buildings will remain open.
    • Activities and access to loading docks will not be affected.
    • Please be advised that the pedestrian and vehicular access to the ramp north of Lot 11, between Greenhouse 6 and Keen Hall, will be temporarily/ intermittently closed on Friday, May 21st between 6:30AM-4:00PM to complete the site investigation potholing activities in this area. Please see areas of activity within the Pothole Exhibit attachment

    The Contractor and PD&C Project Management team will be overseeing these activities with the required support from our Facilities Services partners.

    The following activities will be occurring from 6:30AM to 4:00PM on the School of Medicine Education Building II site and adjacent areas on Thursday, May 13th. The activities will occur within the areas identified in the attached exhibit.

    Geotechnical boring operation

    • Drilling multiple geotechnical boring samples at the locations specified in the Geotechnical Boring Activity Exhibit (equipment: Drill-rig truck, shovels, wheelbarrows, brooms and various hand tools).
    • Pedestrian access will remain open.
    • Activities and access to loading docks will not be affected.
    • Please be advised that the vehicular access to the road north of Greenhouses 6 through 10 will be closed on Thursday, May 13th between 6:30AM-10:30AM to complete the activities in this area.
    • Please be advised that parking at the SOM modular and adjacent areas will be temporarily/intermittently unavailable on Thursday, May 13th between 10:30AM-3:30PM to complete the geotechnical boring activities in this area.

    • Pothole designated areas per attached exhibit to locate and confirm underground utilities in preparation for geotechnical boring operations (equipment: shovels, vacuum potholing equipment).
    • Pedestrian access will remain open.
    • Activities and access to loading docks will not be affected.
    • Please be advised that the vehicular access to the road north of Greenhouses 6 through 10 will be closed on Tuesday, May 4th between 6:30AM-3:30PM to complete the potholing activities in this area.

    • Please be advised that parking will be temporarily unavailable at the SOM Modular Building and at Headhouse #6 as specified in the exhibit.
